Chunky irons don’t win birdies.
If you’ve ever chunked an iron shot or felt that dreaded thud behind the ball, you’re not alone. Most amateur golfers hit the ground before the ball—which kills distance and accuracy.
Here’s how to fix that and start making clean, crisp contact:
-
Think “Hands Ahead” at Impact
At address, your hands should be slightly ahead of the ball. And at impact, even more so. This compresses the ball and ensures your clubface hits the ball before the ground. -
Ball Position: Center to Slightly Forward
For mid-irons (like 7 or 8), play the ball just forward of center. Too far forward, and you’re asking for a fat shot. -
Weight Forward, Stay Centered
Start with 55–60% of your weight on your lead foot—and keep it there throughout the swing. No swaying back! -
Brush the Grass After the Ball
Your divot should start after the ball. Visualize the bottom of your swing arc coming just ahead of the ball, not behind it.
Drill to Try:
Place a small towel or headcover a few inches behind your ball at the range. If you hit the towel, you’re hitting it fat. Clean shots will miss it every time.
Better Contact = Better Golf.
