Quick Golf Tip of the Week: How to Putt Downhill Like a Pro

Quick Golf Tip of the Week: How to Putt Downhill Like a Pro

Putting downhill can be tricky—even seasoned golfers struggle with controlling speed and break. If you're tired of watching your ball race past the hole, here are some key tips to help you master the art of downhill putting.

1. Play for Less Speed, More Break

On a downhill putt, gravity is working against you. That means the ball will naturally roll faster and break more than it would on a flat putt. Read the green carefully and aim for a softer stroke while playing extra break.

2. Grip Down for More Control

Choking down on your putter gives you better control over your stroke and helps you maintain a lighter touch. This small adjustment can prevent you from hitting the ball too hard.

3. Keep a Smooth, Short Stroke

Instead of taking a big backswing and trying to slow down at impact, use a shorter stroke with a consistent, smooth motion. This allows for better distance control and prevents deceleration, which can cause mis-hits.

4. Pick a Target Short of the Hole

A common mistake is aiming directly at the cup. Instead, find a spot a few feet short of the hole where you want your ball to start slowing down. Let gravity do the work from there.

5. Use a Softer Putter Grip

Loosening your grip slightly can help you feel the putter face better and reduce tension in your hands, leading to a more delicate touch.

6. Confidence is Key

Downhill putts can be intimidating, but second-guessing leads to hesitation and mistakes. Trust your read, commit to the stroke, and let the ball roll naturally.

Mastering downhill putts takes practice, but with these tips, you'll start saving strokes on the greens in no time!
