Blog of the Week - Dialing In Your 14: How to Choose the Right Golf Clubs for Your Bag

Blog of the Week - Dialing In Your 14: How to Choose the Right Golf Clubs for Your Bag

At Happy Golf Company, we believe your time on the course should be filled with confidence, comfort, and maybe even a few birdies. But one of the most overlooked keys to playing your best golf isn’t just how you swing — it’s what you swing.

Golfers are allowed 14 clubs in the bag. That’s it. No more. So the question is: how do you pick the right 14 for your game?

Let’s break it down.

1. Start With the Essentials

Every bag should have a few no-brainers:

  • Driver – For max distance off the tee.

  • Putter – Where the strokes really count.

  • Wedges – Typically a pitching wedge (PW), sand wedge (SW), and possibly a lob wedge (LW).

That’s already 4 to 5 clubs accounted for.

2. Build Around Your Strengths

Not every golfer needs the same setup. Ask yourself:

  • Are you better with fairway woods or hybrids?

  • Can you confidently hit long irons?

  • Do you rely on finesse around the greens?

If you're not confident with a 3-iron, swap it for a hybrid or a higher-lofted fairway wood. If you love your wedges, carry four and drop a long iron you never use.

3. Avoid Redundancy

Many golfers carry clubs that go nearly the same distance. For example:

  • A 4-iron and a hybrid that both fly 190 yards.

  • A 60° and 58° wedge that serve the same purpose.

Use a launch monitor or track your distances to avoid overlap. Each club should fill a distinct yardage gap.

4. Think in Yardages, Not Club Names

The smartest setups cover distances in consistent increments. Ideally, there should be a 10–15 yard gap between each club. Your 14-club setup should take you smoothly from tee to green without guessing.

5. Don’t Ignore Course Conditions

If you’re playing a tight course with lots of doglegs, you might need more shot-shaping clubs like long irons. If the greens are firm, bring the high-lofted wedge. Playing in wind? A lower-launching driving iron might help.

Your bag doesn’t have to be the same all year — tailor it to the course and conditions.

6. Sample Setup for the Everyday Golfer

Here’s a solid, balanced 14-club setup to consider:

  1. Driver

  2. 3-wood

  3. 5-wood or hybrid

  4. 4-hybrid

  5. 5-iron

  6. 6-iron

  7. 7-iron

  8. 8-iron

  9. 9-iron

  10. Pitching Wedge

  11. Gap Wedge (50-52°)

  12. Sand Wedge (54-56°)

  13. Lob Wedge (58-60°)

  14. Putter

This setup gives you versatility from tee to green with plenty of options for approach shots and short game finesse.

Final Thought: Choose Clubs That Make You Happy

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all. The best 14 clubs are the ones you hit well. Confidence in your bag equals confidence in your swing.

And if you need a little extra happiness on the course? We’ve got you covered with gloves, gear, and accessories that’ll have you smiling from the first tee to the 18th green.
